Powerful Map Bosses frequently drop Waystones one Tier higher.
Empowerment
Empowering a Map Boss upgrades it to a Powerful Map Boss
Delirium
Maps containing a Delirium Mirror can have the mirror walked through to unleash the rolling Delirium fog ring across the current area.
You must stay within this fog as it expands to maintain the Delirium or it will disappear.

Magic monsters are able to gain Delirium specific Modifiers while inside the fog.

Rare or Unique monsters in the fog may manifest Delirium Demons. Manifested Delirium Demons inhabit the monster's body to occasionally use Skills of their own.

Fractured Mirrors may be found within Delirium Fog, summoning extra monsters while Fracturing Mirror Shards are found at set depths, with more varied rewards.

Defeating Map Bosses has a chance to summon a Grand Mirror on a nearby map.
Precursor Towers
Precursor Towers are ancient structures that are scattered all throughout the Atlas. Precursor Tower Maps can be completed to reveal a large area around them and to obtain a Tablet.

Completing a Precursor Tower requires you to activate the Precursor Beacon at the end of the Map, after defeating the Map Boss.
Map Node
This represents a Map. A Waystone can be used to access it.

If you fail to complete the Map, it may be attempted again but will not contain additional content, Essences, Shrines, or Strongboxes. It will not be Corrupted. Tablets cannot be used on failed Maps.

To complete a Map, defeat the Boss.
Delirious Players
Delirious players are assaulted by illusions, making combat more difficult. Higher delirium causes monsters to deal more damage and have additional Toughness. It can also cause additional monsters to appear or can grant additional modifiers to existing monsters. Monster item drops are improved by higher delirium.

Maps within Fog Banks gain Deliriousness as Map Bosses, Rare Monsters or Unique Monsters are killed.
Grand Mirror
A Grand Mirror causes a reflection of the Map Boss. When the bosses are defeated Delirium fog spreads to nearby Maps.

At least 1 Map the fog spreads to will be transformed into a Simulacrum.
Rite of the Nameless
The Rite of the Nameless is a group of maps which each contain Ritual Altars and a Map Boss.

Completing all Ritual Altars will drop an Effigy Piece.
Great Beast
Great Beasts are Map Bosses marked by Hilda as worthy targets to defeat. Defeating a Great Beast will earn you Hilda's Favour.

Map Boss

Now, you may have noticed while looking at the Atlas that some areas have these icons above them. The icon indicates the area contains some kind of special encounter.

This icon indicates the area has a powerful boss. Because only one in four maps contain a map boss, we're able to make them much more powerful and much more rewarding than they were, in Path of Exile 1.

These bosses come from the campaign, but have had the difficulty increased with changes to AI and some of their abilities.

It's worth noting that because you can see where the bosses are, you can choose to take them on or avoid them.

If you do choose to hunt bosses, though, then you'll be rewarded with special points for the boss hunting section of the Atlas skill tree.

The points here will allow you to specialize in boss killing, giving you much greater rewards for defeating them.
