The nobles of Utzaal had opened their own waterways and purposely drowned themselves, not as a mercy, but to spite would-be looters. This had been an empire ruled by madmen. They were successful in their spite, for we could not drain the deadly waters. Their treasures would remain lost for all time. The other cities, however, proved a slow and steady source of wealth beyond imagination.

Icius had much to say about Doryani. Doryani was a cold and calculating figure, one motivated only by a desire to save his people... forever. Take that ominous note as you will. A shame we never managed to excavate Utzaal.

I do know a way out. If we fail, and the Empire falls, I have one last resort. I fear it, but it is my last hope.

We imprisoned Ichlotl the Blackjaw in a Soul Core, alone, for his crimes. Isolated like that, without any other souls in the lattice, his stone form seemed to retain much of his personality. Do I dare drain my own lifeblood into something we used as a punishment worse than death?

We have toiled so long to defeat death, all I know now is fear... if the sky turns to blood, if flames consume Utzaal, only then will I decide.
Oswald_G3_Ziggurat_Encampment
NPCTextAudio
The ziggurat beneath us was once the Temple of the Sun God, one of the oldest built in the city of Utzaal's religious district. It was in active use for at least a thousand years, but when the Vaal Cataclysm struck, the city flooded, presumably killing everyone inside. Good thing for us, because this lake is the only reason it hasn't been ransacked by other treasure hunters already. One man's mass death is... another man's treasure, I suppose.
Mentor_G3_SandsweptMarsh_LegacyOfTheVaal

Utzaal is close. Be careful. The Vaal heavily relied on the use of corruption. Their lands may still be dangerous.
Mentor_G3_Utzaal
NPCTextAudio
Utzaal is the last intact Vaal city, for a reason that will also be our greatest hurdle. During the first Cataclysm, the city was flooded, killing most of its population and burying its wealth under a valley of water. Corruption has since poisoned that water, making it impossible for anyone to loot the city. From my time in Utzaal when I was young, I do have some idea how to solve this problem... we shall speak again when we find it.
Mentor_G3_On_Waterways
NPCTextAudio
You have found the Waterways? Search it for a control mechanism. Vaal technology, at least in that era, was based on engraved stonework and latent systems of channeled energy. It should be operational, even after all this time... drain the city, and let us see what ancient secrets Utzaal has kept protected for us.

At last, Utzaal's temple district! Untold wealth lies in wait below!
Alva_G3_Gossip_Doryani_Present
NPCTextAudio
By their final days, the Vaal were a deeply tiered empire based on brutal competition. Those at the top vied with each other through any means necessary, and Doryani was the foremost among these ambitious and amoral men. He was second only to Queen Atziri herself. Utzaal was the seat of his power, and ancient writings claim he undertook a vast array of strange projects and sordid experiments here... Some glyphs I have seen are too stomach-turning to discuss.
Alva_G3_Gossip_Servi
NPCTextAudio
Servi has been a fantastic ally to us here. Her people have lived in the vicinity of Utzaal for countless generations, so she's been able to show us all the most interesting Vaal ruins. The accessible ruins were all looted long ago, of course, but the lake around us has protected most of the city since the end of the Vaal empire...

So, the city of Utzaal has been laid bare to the world after all these centuries. I know you're after some particular device, but I can't help but remind you that we are here for a purpose of our own. Treasure hunters hunt treasure, yeah? I'll not be the first to set foot in those deadly sunken ruins, but if you're braving them, you might as well keep an eye out for anything that looks... valuable. In particular, look for buildings with Monkey statues on 'em. If you spy something like that, give me a shout. I'll be waiting with... great anticipation.
Oswald_G3_On_Servi
NPCTextAudio
Servi has been crucial to our survival here. She takes a hefty fee, but she's worth it. Utzaal and its surrounding swamps and jungles are far more dangerous than any other excavation site we've visited. It's almost as if the city itself is a locus for evil... one might say... {cursed}... if one were superstitious. I don't believe in any of that nonsense of course, but Servi and her tribe have survived here for countless generations, so if she wants to put up charms, say ritualistic phrases, make small sacrifices at idols, or avoid certain flowers and animals, I'm all for it.
Oswald_G3_On_Chaos_Trial_Quest_Item

This is a strange artefact... wait, I think I know what this is! There's a door in the depths of the jungle that we've never been able to open. It's far older than Utzaal, and was built on higher terrain. From what I gather, only highly select Vaal could enter, and they would be faced with some sort of trial within. This thing... it essentially marks you as chosen, as an aspirant. It'll get you inside.

The Beast has grown beyond our ability to contain it. We must search for something greater than we currently possess, something that can drain its power and bring it back to a more manageable form. While I slumbered under the numbing effects of Corruption, there was an empire that mastered the use of that deadly energy. We must go to the jungles of the long-ago Vaal. Their ruins may yet hold the secrets we need. That is where we must go, to the sunken city of Utzaal. It is our only hope.

The Ardura can take us south, to the edge of the jungle. The sunken city of Utzaal is not hidden, nor hard to reach... it is protected by a different danger, but we will deal with that when we come to it. When you are ready, we should begin the journey as soon as possible.

Utzaal... my people... they're all long dead. It is one thing to hear it, but... another to see it. This city is nothing but a grave. I can't change their fate, but the Vaal are not entirely gone. Alva—her Vaal ancestry—is proof of that. I will do what I must to protect what remains, and perhaps one day we can rebuild. For that to happen, we need the Weapon. We must travel to the archipelago the Karui call Ngamakanui. If the pieces still exist, that is where they will be found.

I gathered the greatest minds of our era in one place. We embarked on journeys of discovery that mankind could never before conceive. No ethical bounds. No moral limits! We sought immortality, both in flesh, and in machinery. We sought understanding of Corruption. We even sought to master Time itself. In the end, it was all for naught...

We are on a grand quest through time! We'll have to save the explanations for another time, however. All I can say is, we purposely came back to this city, Utzaal, before our own ancestors arrived on Wraeclast. {Will} arrive on Wraeclast, I mean. We've got less than a year to achieve our aims. We have to be gone before they get here, or my historical sagas will get very complicated, very quickly.
