Name
That's less an island and more an active volcano. There's a swarm of deadly little things that make their home in the warrens within. They'll eat the flesh off your bones while you're still screaming. Ugh... but it's their 'god' I'm thinking of. Spyglass reports say he's getting bigger every time they spot him. Sounds to me like he might have one of the artefacts you're seeking.
G4CaptainOnG4_1_1
That island has been shrouded in mist since the time of my eldest forefathers, before the Vaal empire was even a notion in some bloodthirsty noble's head. The tale told by the Hatungo was quite simple: if the mists part and the island shows itself to you, you will be compelled to land. You'll claim you hear the voices of loved ones, or of your gods, or whatever else suits your proclivities. If the crew let you go there, the ship will never return. But sure, we can take you there. What could possibly go wrong?
G4CaptainOnG4_2_1
That's one of the most beautiful and verdant islands in this region. Some time ago, I did hear that one of the more nomadic Karui tribes decided to stop and settle there. They'll know the region well by now, so it would be worth asking them if they have seen any sign of powerful Corruption. It would also be good to see some Karui who don't know me...
G4CaptainOnG4_3_1
That island contains a prison built by the Eternal Empire. It's been 300 years since the cataclysm, but the inmates still remain. Nobody ever let them out. You can still hear them clamoring at the bars. There is definitely something wrong at the heart of that place, which I'm certain means you'll want us to sail straight there.
G4CaptainOnG4_5_1
For generations, that island was used for the coming of age trial of several tribes. Young Karui try to sneak onto the rocks, climb the cliffs, and steal the eggs of the shrikes that nest there. The eggs are a valuable delicacy that many would pay dearly for. In recent years, though, the trial became far more deadly. There is some sort of massive horrific thing nesting at its apex... it immediately makes me think of the corrupting effects of the artefacts you're looking for.
G4CaptainOnG4_7
We're looking for work, yes... if you have enough credit with the trade guild. Let me see here... wow, okay, I can take you wherever you need. We'll set sail right now if you want!
G4CaptainIntroductionContractAccountCreated
We're looking for work, yes. I can take you wherever you need, even places the other captains would never dream of going! But if you want to work with a Kalguuran ship then you'll have to arrange a contract account. You can't just turn up with gold and demand passage. Talk to the port's logistics man, Rog, about that.
G4CaptainIntroductionContractAccountNotCreated
Ah, got a contract account sorted out? Then we can set sail whenever you like.
G4CaptainContractAccountCreated
I'm a new captain, as you've probably guessed. The Kalguurans are skeptical of my people, but they respect our seafaring skills. I joined the Trade Guild as a young deckhand after I ran away from home, and I've worked my way up over the last twenty years. I'm the first Karui captain on a Kalguuran ship, so I've got to make a name for myself, or it'll turn the tide against all of us.
G4CaptainCareer
They don't talk much about their homeland. I'm not allowed to sail there, not because I'm not Kalguuran, but because nobody has yet woven the accomplishments and honours of my family line into an epic poem to be told at their royal court. Their custom is not too different from Karui oral tradition, but it's a difficult situation. In my case, I am no longer part of my tribe, so I have no family line to immortalize in song. Tujen suggested that I could join his, but he was drunk at the time, so...
G4CaptainKalguur
I don't know what to make of the Kalguuran King. I've only heard whispers. Rumours. He's very interested in Vaal artefacts, but I'm secretly wary of selling him relics I come across. Others are hesitant, too... I have noticed that certain types of ancient devices {disappear} before being loaded on merchant ships headed for Kalguur. If you mention this, they will deny it, just like they denied me when I asked... and just like I will deny I ever told you this.
G4CaptainTheKing
Rhodri has been my mentor in the Trade Guild for many years now. He took me under his wing at a time when nobody else wanted to even so much as speak to me. I would never have been able to move up the ranks if not for his advice and support, though you'd never see any of that through his outward gruffness. He tasks the crew into action, and they hate him for it, but that's the first mate's role. He gets the crew's ire, and I get the crew's trust. It must be this way if we are all to survive.
G4CaptainTheFirstMate
My people's traditions have remained the same for thousands of years... until my generation. When I was a young girl, our god of war was slain by a mortal Exile. That impossible event shook everything I believed in. I am looking for my own Way now. I thought I might find my path in trade and commerce, sailing for the Kalguurans. Other {kaivanas} have spread out across Wraeclast in search of meaning. Those that chose to stay true to the old traditions despise us. They think we have rejected the Way, that we dishonour our families. When I visited the Halls of the Dead, my ancestors told me that the Way was meant to empower us, not control us! Who am I dishonouring by seeking my own truth? It's a debate that has fueled the fires of discontent, and separated me from my family...
G4CaptainTheWay
I became a captain against the wishes of the Trade Guild Council. To lead a Kalguuran ship, one must pass a test. I was given a temporary crew and tasked with sailing a certain course in a certain amount of time, a crucial skill for an organisation that 'aims to operate like clockwork over unpredictable seas,' as they put it. At the most dangerous point of the course, between vast rocky shoals on a moonless night, our cargo of refined Verisium caught fire. It was due to explode in mere moments.

I was faced with a choice: abandon ship, or command some of my men to enter that lethal smoke and put out the fire at the cost of their own lives. A rather horrible death, they say, gasping for breath with lungs that no longer work. So, I chose to put out the fire myself. It's how I was raised...

Luckily, the explosive powder was fake, and it was all part of the test. It turns out, one passes or fails based on the votes of the crew that served. I had earned their loyalty with my unexpected act, and many of them still follow me today, on this very ship. The Council does not aid me in any way, but neither do they interfere. It is the best I can hope for until I show some true profit.

Makoru on The Captain's Challenge /5
Makoru: I became a captain against the wishes of the Trade Guild Council. To lead a Kalguuran ship, you must pass a test. I was given a makeshift crew and tasked with sailing a course in a certain amount of time. At the most dangerous point of the course, between two shallow reefs on a moonless night, our cargo of refined Verisium caught fire. It was set to explode at any moment.
Warrior: What an ordeal. How did you handle it?
Witch: Gripping! Go on.
Sorceress: What an adventure! Please, continue.
Ranger: Well clearly you didn't explode. What did you do?
Huntress: Oh, my... This puts me off the water even more.
Monk: I suppose your leadership was tested in that moment.
Mercenary: Blimey. What a predicament.
Makoru: I was faced with a choice: abandon ship, or order some of the crew into the lethal smoke to put out the fire... ... At the cost of their own lives, no less. They say it's a rather horrible death, gasping for breath with burning lungs that no longer work. So I chose to put out the fire myself. That's just how I was raised.
Warrior: Yet here you stand.
Witch: Hmm... are you dead?
Sorceress: But you lived?
Ranger: You lived to tell the tale though, it seems.
Huntress: Such bravery! How'd you survive?
Monk: And yet, you live.
Mercenary: Alright. I gotta know. How'd you make it out?
Makoru: Well luckily for me, it was all fake. It was the main part of the test. The truth of it is, the candidate passes or fails depending on the votes of the crew aboard. I earned their loyalty by my choice, and many of them still follow me to this day, here on this ship. The Council does not aid me in any way, but they also leave me to it. It's the best situation for now, until I show some true profit!
Makoru on Career /5
Makoru: I'm a freshly-minted captain, but not new to these waters. I joined the Trade Guild as a deckhand after I ran away from home. I then worked my way up ever since. I finally took the Captain's Challenge not too long ago. and now, I'm the first Karui captain on a Kalguuran ship!
Warrior: What a story. Good for you.
Witch: Well, well... What a go-getter.
Sorceress: I admire you for your achievements, Makoru.
Ranger: Well done. It can't have been easy.
Huntress: Aye, you've done well. Good on ya.
Monk: So long as you are capable, it makes little difference to me.
Mercenary: Bit of an entrepreneur, eh? Go get it, I say!
Makoru: Thank you, but my story has only just begun.
Makoru: Well! Aren't you a delight...
Makoru: Now I've just got to get out there and make a name for myself. I've put a lot on the line to get to where I am. Who knows? Maybe we'll achieve great things together.
Makoru on The Weapon /3
Makoru: Are you telling me there may be {another} Cataclysm? You should have told me sooner! If this 'Weapon' can truly save us all, we'll do whatever it takes to aid you.
Warrior: You're doing a fine job as it is.
Witch: As you should. But don't worry, I've got it handled.
Sorceress: My people, too, have sworn a pledge to fight Corruption. Welcome to the war.
Ranger: You may come to regret that promise, but let's hope not.
Huntress: You're doing just fine, Makoru. But, I accept your vow.
Monk: It may take everything we have... and more.
Mercenary: It's a longshot, but it's all we've got really. Don't sweat it.
Makoru: I won't fail. Maybe this is my chance to prove myself.
Makoru on Tavakai /4
Makoru: In a strange way... all of this may be what ends up healing my relationship with my father. Tavakai has seen what comes of his stubborn Way... And I've seen that there is some wisdom to be found in our tribe's strength and loyalty.
Warrior: You two finding common ground is at least one good thing to come of all this.
Witch: Well that's a relief. I thought you two might be the death of each other.
Sorceress: I am pleased. Let your differences bring you together, not drive you apart!
Ranger: I hope for your sake, he will not let you down again.
Huntress: Don't be a stranger to your tribe. That's all I'll say on it.
Monk: Good. You are best suited as allies.
Mercenary: All's well that ends well, I guess.
Makoru: You're not wrong there.
Makoru: I guess blood truly is thicker than water.
Makoru: There'll be a lot of conversations to come, but I am hopeful.
Makoru: Well, if there is one thing I know about my father, he learns from his mistakes.
Makoru: I know... I won't be.
Makoru: We are more than that. We're family.
Makoru: We'll just have to see where it goes from here.
Makoru: So, it seems Tavakai has pledged to aid you and... well... The crew and I already discussed it. We also volunteer! I didn't think I'd be fighting side-by-side with my father any time soon... Truly, these are the end times! Ha!
Makoru on Introduction /5
Makoru: Welcome aboard. I'm Makoru. Captain of the Aurora May.
Makoru: Welcome back!
Warrior: I've acquired a charter, and I'm told you're the best Captain for the job.
Witch: So, this charter here means you have to do what I say, right?
Sorceress: Good day. I have received a charter and am looking for a crew.
Ranger: I've got a... paper thing... A charter.
Huntress: Got a charter here.
Monk: I have a charter. And I seek a ship and a crew.
Mercenary: I've bought a charter for this ship so, guess you work for me now.
Makoru: Well... I think I might be the only Captain at the moment. But, that is nice to hear!
Makoru: Not exactly... but we're happy to oblige what we can.
Makoru: Look no further. The Aurora May and her crew are at your service.
Makoru: Then the hard work is done. We are at your service.
Makoru: Great! Then the Aurora May and her crew are at your service.
Makoru: Seek no further. We'll take you wherever you need to go.
Makoru: It seems that way, doesn't it?
Makoru: We can take you wherever you need. Places other captains would never dream of going! Your business is your business. Now, we can set sail whenever you like.
Makoru on Introduction /4
Makoru: Welcome aboard. I'm Makoru, Captain of the Aurora May. Yes, we are indeed looking for work, but we only operate under the Meridian Free Traders of Kingsmarch. You can't just turn up with gold and demand passage.
Warrior: My apologies. What do I need to do?
Witch: Are you sure? What if I had quite a lot of gold?
Sorceress: I meant no offense. What is the proper custom?
Ranger: Oh... I have no idea how this kind of thing works.
Huntress: Ugh. What should I do then?
Monk: Of course. What must I do?
Mercenary: I'm sure {someone} wants this gold.
Makoru: Not to worry...
Makoru: I don't take bribes! We have a process you must follow.
Makoru: That's fine. Let me explain.
Makoru: It's simple really.
Makoru: Just a bit of paperwork.
Makoru: It won't take a moment...
Makoru: Oh we want it alright... but first...
Makoru: You'll need to arrange an account and charter. Rog's your man for that. Once it's all sorted, we can talk.
Makoru on Kedge Bay /1
Makoru: Well... the fog is gone. But... you let out some fearsome god. Win some, lose some... I guess. I wonder what might be left over from the crashed ships there... hmm...
Makoru on Kedge Bay /1
Makoru: Well... the fog is gone. But... you let out some fearsome god. Win some, lose some... I guess. I wonder what might be left over from the crashed ships there... hmm...
Makoru on Kalguur /3
Makoru: They don't talk very much about their homeland and I'm definitely not allowed to sail there.
Warrior: Are only Kalguurans permitted there?
Witch: Is it because you're not one of them?
Sorceress: You are not permitted because of your lineage?
Ranger: That seems oddly cruel. For what reason?
Huntress: Do you need to prove yourself first, perhaps?
Monk: Do they only allow Kalguurans?
Mercenary: What? Why not? They scared of ya?
Makoru: Nah, it's nothing like that. It's just part of their culture. First, someone has to immortalise my family's triumphs into an epic poem. Then, it must be told at their royal court, before their King. This sort of custom is not too different from Karui oral traditions, but it's a tricky situation for me. I am no longer part of my tribe, so I have no family to immortalise in song. Tujen suggested that {we} could be family, but he was drunk at the time...
Makoru on The King /5
Makoru: I don't know what to make of the Kalguuran King. I've only heard whispers. Rumours.
Warrior: Gossip usually isn't very reliable, but go on.
Witch: Oh I do love some juicy gossip now and then!
Sorceress: I know very little of this King. Tell me what you've heard.
Ranger: A monarch with secrets. Typical.
Huntress: Not the good kind, I take it?
Monk: Don't believe everything you hear.
Mercenary: Go on then, spill the beans.
Makoru: Well, they say he's a bit obsessed with Vaal artefacts. But something tells me this is quite a concern for the Kalguurans. I've noticed certain types of Vaal devices seem to up and disappear before being loaded onto ships headed for Kalguur.
Warrior: Perhaps this King seeks something he ought not to have.
Witch: Hah! His own people are undermining his goals. Brilliant.
Sorceress: Treasonous actions. You should be careful with this information, Makoru.
Ranger: Let the coward come and find what he wants himself then.
Huntress: The Kalguurans ought to be careful. A leaders wrath can be brutal.
Monk: Perhaps they protect him. Or... themselves. Intriguing.
Mercenary: Hah! Cheeky buggers. I'm startin' to really like these Kalguurans!
Makoru: If you mention this, they will deny it, just like they did when I asked... And just like I will deny ever telling you this.
Makoru on Arastas /1
Makoru: I can't believe the Twilight Order are responsible for bringing the Beast back into the world! To be honest... I'd rather not go back there, if we don't have to.
Makoru on Arastas /1
Makoru: I can't believe the Twilight Order are responsible for bringing the Beast back into the world! To be honest... I'd rather not go back there, if we don't have to.
Makoru on Arastas /3
Makoru: The first thing that grinning lot of fools did when they got here was build their enclave. The Twilight Order, they call themselves. Spend most of their time brain washing anyone who'll listen. And they've even got a decent chunk of Karui converted to their cause... whatever it may be. Bigger chunk of us can't stand them though, myself included.
Warrior: As long as they cause no harm, I wouldn't worry.
Witch: Smiling evangelists? Oh, I'd rather die.
Sorceress: I will try my best not to eviscerate them.
Ranger: Genuinely sounds like an awful place.
Huntress: Try not to judge a book by its cover. Maybe they mean well?
Monk: Any following is easily misunderstood, from the outside.
Mercenary: I'll figure 'em out. Been in a fight with many a zealot back in Trarthus.
Makoru: I just think it's a dangerous game they're playing. Religion always is. I suppose we can visit them if you like, but I doubt it'll be very helpful.

Makoru: You spoke to the Mother of Death, herself? You're really getting a reputation around here! One day, I'd love to speak to Hinekora. I have questions of my own.

Makoru: I am still astounded that Matiki told you about our Halls of the Dead. I was brought there only once, as a child... ... and I spoke with my grandfather, and his grandfather before him. They gave me advice I still follow to this day - to stay true to myself.
Warrior: Sound advice.
Witch: How original.
Sorceress: A timeless sentiment.
Ranger: Words I live by.
Huntress: There's more than just ourselves... but I do understand.
Monk: Being true to oneself, can also mean being true to one's calling.
Mercenary: Strong independent lady.
Makoru: Unfortunately, staying true to myself means I can never return... But if you have an invitation, I can at least take {you} there.

Makoru: That's less an island and more an active volcano. There's a swarm of deadly little things that make their home in the warrens further inland. We call them: the kinfolk.
Warrior: They don't sound too bad.
Witch: Oh, they sound cute!
Sorceress: Kinfolk? So they are some sort of tribe?
Ranger: People who live off the land? Maybe I'll fit in.
Huntress: Maybe I can make peace with them?
Monk: Perhaps I can look around, unnoticed.
Mercenary: Nothin' a drink or two can't smooth over between us.
Makoru: They're feisty little buggers. They'll swarm you and eat the flesh off your bones while you're still screaming.
Warrior: I stand corrected.
Witch: Oh yes, I knew it! They {are} cute!
Sorceress: Never mind then.
Ranger: Guess not.
Huntress: Ah. Right.
Monk: Hmm. Stealth may not work then.
Mercenary: Okay. Might need more than a couple of drinks then.
Makoru: It's really their tyrant I'm worried about. Reports say he's getting bigger and bigger every time he's spotted. But sure... we can take you there I guess...

Makoru: That island has been shrouded in mist for generations... ... even since before the Vaal empire! The tale told by our {hatungo} goes: if the mists part and the island shows itself, you will be compelled to land on its shores. You'll claim to hear the voices or see the visions of loved ones, or of your gods, or whatever else is dear to you. If we go there, there's a real chance this ship will never return.
Warrior: You're the best Captain for the job. We'll make it back.
Witch: Don't be so silly. We'll be fine.
Sorceress: We are not just any crew. We will be alright.
Ranger: Don't fear the myth you hear. Fear the reality you see.
Huntress: I'm not afraid. We'll slay anything in our way.
Monk: This {hatungo} may be mistaken. Let us see how we fare.
Mercenary: Ah yeah but ya know... you're the best there is.
Makoru: Well... what could possibly go wrong?

Makoru: I told you I would take you anywhere, but I'm hesitant about this one. Ngakanu might be the most dangerous island of them all, because... ... I was born there. They won't outright kill me for showing up, at least not in these more... peaceful times. But if you insist, well, let me tell you, it is quite beautiful. I just won't be able to go ashore with you.
Warrior: Will {I} be welcome there?
Witch: How about me?
Sorceress: Will they mind my trespass?
Ranger: How will I get on there?
Huntress: Will they appreciate {my} arrival?
Monk: How hostile will their response be to my arrival?
Mercenary: Will they like seeing me, do you think?
Makoru: You won't be welcome inland, but you'll likely be allowed inside the front gate. Just be respectful!

Makoru: What's this? A part of a map? Huh... can't tell much from this alone... Let me know if you find more of it.
Makoru: Now we're getting somewhere. We've got half a map! See if you can find more scraps.
Makoru: That's most of the map now, but I can't quite make out the destination... We need one more piece!

Makoru: That prison island was built by the Eternal Empire. It's been three hundred years since the Cataclysm, but the inmates still wail from within the walls there. Can you believe it? Nobody ever let them out!
Warrior: The Eternals {are} long dead, I suppose...
Witch: Forgotten souls, left to die. This one might be my favourite...
Sorceress: Perhaps they are the shame of their people.
Ranger: Maybe that was the intention.
Huntress: Sounds bloody dreadful.
Monk: The Eternal Empire... not so Eternal it seems.
Mercenary: Prisoners aren't usually the first to be saved... or even the last.
Makoru: It's a horrible place. You can still hear them pounding at the bars of their cells... Considering how awful it is, I guess you'll want us to sail straight there, right?

Makoru on Shrike Island /4
Makoru: For generations, the Isle of Shrikes was used for a coming of age trial for several tribes. Young Karui try to sneak onto the rocks, climb the cliffs, and take the eggs of the shrikes that nest there. The eggs are a valuable delicacy that many Karui would pay through the nose for. In recent years, though, the trial became far more deadly. The things that nest there... they are vile things.
Warrior: I wish I'd the chance to run the trial in my youth.
Witch: Squawkers all around, I take it?
Sorceress: We have all manner of vultures through the Vastiri. I'm sure I can handle it.
Ranger: I'm not scared. I've faced many a creature.
Huntress: Sounds like a hunt is afoot.
Monk: I am disciplined. I can handle the task.
Mercenary: Birds. Loud. Annoying. Ugh.
Makoru: You don't have to run some trial to be Karui. Blood is blood.
Makoru: It's not really the type of island outsiders should be trespassing on... But, let's do it anyway!

Warrior: Who knows what we might find.
Witch: Shouldn't you be... more excited about this?
Sorceress: It could be worth our time.

Warrior: I look forward to meeting more Karui tribes.
Witch: Sure. Let's go say hello sometime.
Sorceress: I look forward to meeting them.

Makoru on The Way /4
Makoru: My people's traditions have remained the same for thousands of years! Until {my} generation, that is... When I was just a young girl, Tukohama, the Karui god of war, was slain by a mortal. That turned my world upside down. Our own ancestor... killed by a mortal? I am looking for my own Way now. One that doesn't rely on gods or old traditions. I thought I might find my path in trade and commerce. So here I am, sailing for the Kalguurans. Other Karui like me have spread out across Wraeclast in search of meaning. The Elders call us {kaivana.} They think we have rejected the Way, that we dishonour our families.
Warrior: Do you take that to heart?
Witch: One can guess what that means.
Sorceress: I, too, was insulted for choosing my own destiny.
Ranger: It's your life, not theirs. Live it how you choose.
Huntress: Oh, Makoru... I know that pain well.
Monk: Is there nothing you can do to heal this wound?
Mercenary: What's a {kaivana?}
Makoru: Not really. At least, not anymore.
Makoru: Yes... one can.
Makoru: Well, look at us now. We're doing okay.
Makoru: Oh I do! Can't you tell? Heh.
Makoru: It's not a pain I feel these days.
Makoru: Time heals all wounds. As does following your own heart!
Makoru: It means {nothing} good.
Makoru: Now, when I was a young girl, I visited the Halls of the Dead... ... my ancestors told me that the Way was meant to empower us, not to control us! So who am I dishonouring by seeking {my} truth? It's a debate that I am tired of having. But either way, it has separated me from my family, and I must live with that.
Makoru on Arastas /12
Warrior: These waters have long been Karui. Do the Elders speak of anything like a forge?
Witch: Please tell me the Karui know something that might get this moving. We need an ancient forge.
Sorceress: I am seeking an island with ancient technology. Likely buried beneath the earth. Do the Karui tales mention anything like this?
Ranger: Makoru, have the Karui passed down any stories about an island with an ancient forge on it?
Huntress: We must find an ancient forge. Have you lot heard anything about summat like that?
Monk: May I entreat the wisdom of the Karui? We are looking for an ancient forge.
Mercenary: Miss Makoru, please tell me you got some ideas about where to find an old forge, or an island with a bunch of ancient shite on it.
Makoru: I've never heard any mention of such a place.
Kanu: I have.
Makoru: Really? Where?
Kanu: My old tribe tells a tale of a foreign medicine woman. It's a very old story. Took place after a great fire scoured the world. My ancestors had to dive into the sea, just to survive. When they came to the surface, they found a burned woman, floating in the tide.
Makoru: What's this have to do with a forge? Get to the point.
Kanu: She begged them to take her somewhere and promised to forge them a great reward. But... the toll was too heavy. She was too injured. And she died trying to use the forge. She was buried there.
Makoru: Where?
Kanu: Arastas. Well... wasn't called that back then though.
Makoru: Arastas? Why didn't you mention this sooner?
Kanu: Mention what? An old myth about a foreign woman who died trying to use a forge some unknown thousands of years ago? I only knew you were looking for pieces of some old artefact. I didn't hear nothing about looking for a forge!
Warrior: That sounds promising. Let's set sail.
Witch: That's quite a specific myth. If it's true, Arastas must be the place.
Sorceress: Well, it is at least something to investigate. We must go to Arastas.
Ranger: It seems we have no choice but to travel to Arastas.
Huntress: We're lucky you were here, Kanu. Let's try Arastas.
Monk: The final piece of the puzzle becomes clear. Arastas is our destination.
Mercenary: We need to work on our communication, mate. Sorry, {first mate.} Let's visit Arastas.
Makoru on Oriath /1
Makoru: So, a united Wraeclast sails at our back. Who would've thought? We'll split off and deliver you to Oriath harbour, as planned. Dark clouds gather on the horizon... guess that's our cue.
